| NOAA's National Weather Service has fully implemented the Enhanced Fujita (EF) Scale to rate tornadoes, replacing the original Fujita Scale. The EF scale will continue to rate tornadoes on a scale from zero to five, but ranges in wind speed will be more accurate with the improved rating scale. |

Global Average Temperature for January Highest On Record, U.S. Temperature Near Average for Month |
| In an effort to improve its 24 to 96 hour forecasts, NOAA has deployed its high-altitude Gulfstream-IV jet to acquire atmospheric data from severe winter storms originating over the Pacific Ocean that will affect the United States. |
The combined global land and ocean surface temperature was the highest of any January on record, according to scientists at NOAA's National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C. |
